History

The Be Active Cockburn website was set up in January 2009 to provide information about the importance of regular physical activity and where to ‘be active’ in the City of Cockburn.

The original website was created by the City of Cockburn with support from the Western Australian Local Government Association, Premier’s Physical Activity Taskforce, Lotterywest and South Metropolitan Public Health Unit.

In September 2009 the website expanded to include information about active transport with the introduction of the TravelSmart program to the City of Cockburn, supported by the Department of Transport. In 2013 the TravelSmart program expanded to include Your Move.

In June 2010 South Metropolitan Public Health Unit helped to add additional healthy lifestyles information to the website including nutrition, alcohol, smoking, and mental health webpages.

In July 2011, the City of Cockburn became one of 90 Local Governments around Australia to become part of the Healthy Communities Initiative. As part of this initiative, the 3-year Co-Health program is funded by the Australian Government to help reduce the risk of weight-related chronic disease. Details about programs and who can take part in them can be found on the Healthy Lifestyles page. The City now employs a permanent health promotion officer and adopted a Public Health Plan in November 2013 that enables a variety of health-promoting activity for Cockburn residents to continue.
