Mental Health

Good mental health is about a sense of well-being, self-confidence and self-esteem. It is about the ability to maintain relationships, cope with stress, contribute to the community and enjoy life.

Many people believe that mental health means an absence of mental health problems or illness. However, good mental health is also related to the presence of positive attitudes, rather than the absence of something negative. People who are mentally healthy are more productive, more socially connected and more likely to achieve what they want from their lives.

Positive mental health and physical health go hand-in-hand. If your physical health is poor, your mental health can suffer too. Likewise, if your mental health is poor, your physical health can be affected. Mental health can also be affected by alcohol, drugs and  lifestyle factors.

Mental health problems can arise from a chemical imbalance in the brain. Problems are usually related to stress and things that happen in our daily life. Mental health problems have also been linked to an excessive use of alcohol, drugs and other substances and, exposure to severely distressing experiences.

It is difficult to be absolutely sure of the causes of mental illness in all situations.
