Schools – Travel Smart

Two schools in the City of Cockburn and eight other schools are helping the Department of Transport TSTS team by taking part in the Metro-wide TravelSmart to School pilot program. Yangebup Primary School and Mater Christi Catholic Primary School aim to relieve congestion, increase safety and keep kids fit by encouraging them to use active transport to get to school.

In Spring 2010 parents and carers at all schools in the City of Cockburn will have the opportunity to be trained to develop Walking School Bus programs for their schools. Information will be sent to schools in September 2010.

TravelSmart Calendar

TravelSmart encourages people to reduce their car use by choosing alternatives such as walking, cycling, public transport and carpooling. TravelSmart encourages people to make small changes in their travel choices. You can find out more about the State-Wide TravelSmart Program at www.transport.wa.gov.au/travelsmart

These calendars are free to anyone who signs the declaration that they will avoid driving their car on at least one day per week…

The City of Cockburn is encouraging participation in this program which will continue until October 2012.

Participants are asked to add their name to the “Roll of Honour” which may be publicised in newsletters, local newspapers and on the Be Active Cockburn website. You may elect to have only your initials published for privacy reasons, if you prefer. There are fantastic prizes to be won throughout the year.

Co-Health Launched at the Breakfast of Champions

The City of Cockburn launched its Co-Health Healthy Lifestyles program, at the Cockburn Seniors Centre on the 20th October 2011. Co-Health is part of the Healthy Communities Initiative, funded by the Australian Government.

The City hosted the launch as the Breakfast of Champions, a free breakfast event, inspired by Co-Health Champion, Dean Wynne. Co-Health will create opportunities for residents that are not generally in the paid workforce to improve their health and well-being and assist them in taking the necessary steps towards a better lifestyle.

The breakfast was a huge success with over 100 people attending. Inspirational words were heard from Co-Health Champions, City of Cockburn Mayor Logan Howlett and Dean Wynne.

Following the breakfast, Patrick Burtscher, one of the founders of Nordic Academy provided free Nordic Walking demonstrations, generating lots of interest within the community. Nordic walking is one of Co-Health’s 12 programs, and will be now be offered on a weekly basis. Details can be found through the lifestyle directory. Dean Wynne also led an AustCycle session run by Cycling Western Australia.

Thank you to all who attended the breakfast. To find out about all of the Co-Health programs, click on the Lifestyle directory tab above.

Co-Health Project

The City of Cockburn was one of four WA Local Governments to receive funding in the second round of the national Healthy Communities Initiative. The Co-Health Lifestyle Project will be launched in October followed by a Healthy Lifestyle Awareness Week in late Spring.

“We want to keep Australians well and out of hospital, and programs like Healthy
Communities help to fund programs that are established locally to best address local
health needs,” said the Federal Minister for Health and Ageing, Nicola Roxon. “The Cockburn City Council is one example where they are introducing tried and
tested physical activity and healthy eating programs to suit their local needs.”

People who are not working fulltime who would like to become more active, learn more about nutrition or simply lose a bit of weight will be able to join in some fun community activities and programs. The Co-Health program aims to be accessible to all, with travel, child-care, carer’s support and leave and culturally appropriate programs on offer. Watch this space for more about the program.

City of Cockburn supports Walk Safely School 20th May 2011

Students braved the squally weather on National Walk Safely to School day on 20th May. Walking to school helps children stay healthy, keeps the air cleaner, saves money and reduces traffic congestion. Four schools, Coogee Primary School, Kerry St Community School, Mater Christi Catholic Primary School and Yangebup Primary School took up the City of Cockburn’s offer of a subsidized healthy breakfast. Well done to all schools and parents who encourage children to walk to school on a regular basis.

TravelSmart to School Awards

Two schools in Yangebup will continue to take part in the TravelSmart to School pilot program in 2011. To read about their progress and awards see page 1 of the latest Be Active Cockburn newsletter (4MB file)

TimeSmart Travel

The TimeSmart Travel promotion was launched at the Cockburn Rotary Spring Fair in Hamilton Hill in October 2010. This promotion allows people who are time poor to see that time spent driving a car is time wasted, whereas time spent using alternative means of transport can be time well-spent. Even though the actual travelling time is longer, the time is not wasted. See the  TimeSmart Travel Poster and the TimeSmart Travel for Workers Poster

Safe Speed Promise

Mayors of Cockburn, Fremantle and Melville launched the Safe Speed Promise Program by signing giant promises at the Regional Concert At Manning Park in March 2011. You can complete the Safe Speed Promise and  receive a small gift pack as well as go into a Lucky Draw to win a Margaret River Getaway or one of 12x $50 vvouchers. The draw will take place on 1st May.
Walk Over October

Following ten successful years of Walk Week, 2011 sees the replacement of this event with the launch of WALK OVER OCTOBER. Throughout the month there will be walking initiatives all OVER the state and OVER the month of October.

Encourage your community to reduce the number of short car trips by walking all or part of your journey to your favourite destinations. Combine walking with public transport to find some of the thirty minutes of physical activity needed each day for good health.

Throughout October there will be many ways to get involved.
