Smoking is one of the leading preventable causes of death and disease in Australia. It is responsible for about 15,000 deaths every year. In 2003, tobacco caused  one in 10 deaths in Australia, and more disease and injury in Australia than any other single risk factor. Tobacco is also responsible for approximately 90 percent of all drug-caused deaths.

The City of Cockburn encourages a smokefree environment as part of the Cockburn Tobacco Action Plan.
